This week Quintin Tarantino's 9th movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood takes you back to the 60's in the lives of Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Rick Dalton is an aging actor who slowly starts to realize that his best years are behind him. Rick Dalton is his close friend and stuntman on set. The movie is a story on their strive to for fame during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
The movie also revolves around Charles Manson, the sect leader of the Manson Family. A group that started out as a community filled with LSD and wild orgies. The nature loving community later took a turn for worse and later became known for the infamous Manson Murders. Charles Manson was able to persuade his followers to committing horrendous crimes after he became obsessed by the book, the Revelation and apocalyptic messages he perceived to be hidden within songs by the Beatles.
Amongst one of the worst crimes was the murder of Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie) by four members of the Manson Family. The murder is just a mere event in the lives of the lead characters of the movie. However, according to multiple reviews, Tarantino does not hold back is his attempt to capture the horrific and gruesome event on film. Even though Tarantino is known for including bloody scenes within his scripts, many claim he may have outdone himself this time.
Even though an astonishing cast has contributed to this piece of work; with the likes of Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis and Timothy Olyphant playing smaller roles next to Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Many critics seem to agree that it has been Tarantino's ability of capturing the zeitgeist which makes it so special. Even claiming that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood may even out do some of his previous works. However, we'll just have to wait for a little while to find out ourselves.
