Each year a new trend enters the sneakerworld. But there isn’t a sneaker more timeless than the Air Force 1. The sneaker is worn by sneakerheads but also your dad who doesn’t care about fashion trends. The AF1 is a universally loved sneaker. And that isn’t without reason. The AF1 is simplistic in design, fits well in a lot of outfits and most importantly: looks incredibly fresh.
The Air Force 1 is originally released as a high-topmodel in 1982. The popular low AF1 is released the latter year. The production of the sneaker was almost cancelled in 1984 but fans made sure the production continued. Nike is sure to be content with this decision now. The Air Force 1 is Nike’s 2 best bestseller.
The AF1 has also been revolutionary. It was the very first basketball sneaker to introduce the Air Cushion technology. Nowadays this Air Cushion technology is an essential part of Nike’s sneakers. The Air Tech made the AF1 a popular choice when it came to basketball sneakers.
The Air Force wasn’t only the number one sneaker for basketball players. There was also another area where Nike would rather not be associated with: drug dealing. The AF1 had become a loved sneaker for many drug dealers. Because of the crack epidemic in the 90s in America drug dealers grew richer and richer. A lot of dealers made use of their recently acquired wealth and bought cars, jewelry and you guessed it: Air Forces. The Air Force 1 became a real status symbol in the ghetto.
In the 2000s the Air Force craze reached a new high. Nelly dropped the track Air Force Ones. An homage to then already classic sneakers. Nike saw a lot of potential in hiphop’s love for the Air Force 1 and decided to do something with it. Nike collaborated with rapper, among which Jay Z and Fat Joe. The relationship between hiphop and the Air Force 1 is still as strong today as it was then. Travis Scott is releasing a new edition of his Air Force 1.
