Shawn Stüssy, the founder of the brand, was a surfer who started once shaping his own boards for friends and locals in Laguna Beach, California.

To promote his surfboards, he designed t-shirts with his surname written in a graffiti-influenced hand style on it: the company logo which is still known today.
